Tourism Society Shines at Lighthouse HQ

Monday September 18, 2017

Corks were popping when members, their guests and Chairmen past and present gathered at Trinity House London for The Tourism Society’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.

This grand venue, home to the General Lighthouse Authority offered a glittering back-drop for eminent academic, author and Tourism Society Fellow, Victor Middleton OBE and VisitEngland Chairman, Denis Wormwell, to shed light on the development of tourism as a sector and the Society’s role as a key influencer over the last 40 years.

In his address, Victor Middleton urged the Society to play its role in the emerging debate on the best way to manage the growing demands tourism is placing on destinations.  He called on today’s members to engage with academia and foster relationships, through them, with the leaders of tomorrow.  And he urged the adoption of common terminology when debating tourism and its benefits so that the sector speaks with one voice.

Denis Wormwell spoke of the advances made in the operational delivery of tourism over the past 40 years and the role this has played in growing the sector and its value.  He reminded the gathering that ultimately tourism is a people business and congratulated the Tourism Society on providing a forum for the personal development of its members.   With the future for tourism looking bright, and as life begins at 40, Denis wished the Society and its member continuing success for the many years to come.

Commenting on the evening, Tourism Society Chairman Hayley Beer-Gamage FTS said: “We were delighted that Victor and Denis agreed to share their thoughts with The Tourism Society members and guests tonight.  Trinity House London has provided us with a beautiful venue for this very special evening and we’re very grateful to Made for bringing the fantastic Capital String Quartet to entertain us.  The G&Ts offered by The Oxford Artisan Distillery have been a big hit and we send sincere thanks to Hospitality Impact for helping us deliver such a successful and happy event”.
